Minutes from EPBAA Meeting

12/13/11

-Meeting called to order at the Elks Lodge at 1930. It was attended by 32 members, 10 retirees, 1 part-time, 3 support staff, and our special guest Mr. Dieling.

-Pledge of Allegiance

-Minutes from meeting held 10/11/11 were read and motions by Lafin and Ciszewski, all accepted.

-Treasurer’s Report was read and motions by Corrigan and Carney, all accepted.

OLD BUSINESS:

-Mr. Dieling was present to view the plaque which will be posted in front of the police station in the coming weeks.

-The Kyle Dieling Scholarship is moving forward with plans to advertise in the local papers during the coming months. Applications will be due May 31st, 2012. The Association hopes to maintain a $500 scholarship per year. Qualifications are as follows:

  • Must be an Elmhurst resident
  • Must have maintained a 2.0 GPA or higher while enrolled at a college.
  • Must be a sophomore of higher.
  • Must be enrolled in a Law Enforcement program and be a full-time student.
  • Provide written acceptance letter from attending college or university, or documentation of enrollment.

-Fundraising up to date has been a bit short of last year.  Some discussion was had regarding distributing the fundraising letter ourselves, thus making more funds available for donations and events.

-2011 Shop with a Cop was held 12/03 and the E.P.B.A.A. sponsored 4 children, while private donations made it possible for a fifth child to participate. This event was very impressive, with approx. 70 squad cars, officers and children involved. The event started with open gym and breakfast at the new Glen Ellyn Park District facility, and then proceeded to the Meijer store in Bloomingdale via uninterrupted motorcade. Many citizens cheered along the route and several press crews covered the event for local news and papers.

-Some discussion was had regarding sponsoring our own, E.P.B.A.A. Shop with a Cop for 2012. A committee needs to be formed and begin the process soon as this will require dedication and detailed planning to be a safe, successful event.

-2012 Candle Light Bowl is scheduled for February 4th. Members are asked to begin forming lanes and getting involved by selling/buying raffle tickets. This year’s main prizes will be a 42” or bigger LCD TV, a $750 travel voucher, and many more fine items.

-President Coughlin reiterated the rules and qualifications for the scholarship awards.

NEW BUSINESS:

-Nominations for Officers: President, Treasurer, and Secretary of the E.P.B.A.A. will be taken during the January 2012 meeting. Terms are two (2) years.

-Annual “Tackle the Tower” fundraiser for the American Lung Association will be held February 12, 2012, at the Oak Brook Tower.  A motion for funding a team was by Sgt. Weatherford and D.C. Kveton.  Anyone interested in tackling the tower for a great cause, contact any E.P.B.A.A. officer or D.C. Kveton.

-Anyone interested in participating in a softball team to be used primarily for charitable events, contact any E.P.B.A.A. officer. Having a uniformed team available would not only be great PR for the Association, it’ll be fun.

DONATIONS:

-AAIM- 2011 donation request from AAIM, an organization the E.P.B.A.A. has long sponsored, was inadvertently overlooked. Mistakenly, AAIM placed a full page ad for the E.P.B.A.A. in their 2011 book.  Secretary Rivkin motioned for a donation to cover half the cost of the ad, and Ken Lafin second. All members agreed.

-Metropolitan Family Services (M.F.S.) requested an annual donation. Secretary Rivkin motioned for a donation and Chief Panico second. All members agreed. The donation will give the E.P.B.A.A. recognition in the annual report of M.F.S.

Meeting was called to close at 20:10.
